JOB DESCRIPTION - HYDROPOWER TECHNICIAN

Job Title: Hydropower Technician

Report to: Electrician Department Supervisor

Locality: Kigutu Clinic, Vyanda, Bururi

Position Type: Full-Time

Key Responsibilities

  1. Operation of Hydropower Equipment

Oversee the daily operation of the hydropower plant to ensure continuous and efficient power generation. Operate and monitor hydropower turbines, generators, valves, and control systems. Monitor plant performance and ensure the plant meets energy generation target Adjust operational parameters to maintain optimal power generation. Coordinate with the team on campus to maintain stable electricity supply.

  1. Maintenance and Repairs

Develop and implement maintenance schedules and reliability programs. Insure proper preventive and corrective maintenance on mechanical and electrical equipment. Inspect turbines, pumps, gates, transformers, and generators for wear or damage. Troubleshoot and repair faults in hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical systems.

  1. Monitoring and Inspection

Conduct routine inspections of dam, water intake systems, penstocks, spillways, and powerhouse equipment. Record operational data and maintenance activities in technical logs. Report abnormalities, safety risks, or equipment failures.

  1. Safety and Compliance
  • Follow safety procedures and environmental regulations related to hydropower operations.
  • Ensure safe handling of tools, equipment, and electrical systems.
  • Participate in emergency response procedures when required.
  1. Technical Support
  • Assist engineers in installation, testing, and commissioning of hydropower and electrical equipment.
  • Support upgrades and improvements of plant systems.
  • Collaborate with maintenance teams and external contractors.
  1. Qualifications and Requirements

6.1. Education

  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Hydropower Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electromechanics, or related technical field.

6.2. Professional Experience

  • At least 2-3 years of experience working in a hydropower plant, power generation facility, or industrial mechanical/electrical environment.
  • Experience in operation and maintenance of turbines, generators, pumps, and electrical systems is an asset.

6.3. Technical Skills

  • Good knowledge of hydropower plant operations and equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Knowledge of preventive and corrective maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and electrical schematics.
  • Basic computer skills for recording operational and maintenance data.

6.4. Other Skills and Competencies

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a technical team.
  • High level of attention to safety procedures and environmental regulations.
  • Good communication and reporting skills

6.5. Languages

  • Working knowledge of French or English (knowledge of Kirundi is an asset).
